Providence man indicted with possession of more than
4 kilos of cocaine with the intent to distribute
Brayanth A. Fernandez, 35, of Providence, R.I., was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday with knowingly and intentionally possessing more than 500 grams of cocaine with the intent to distribute. Fernandez was also indicted on one count of knowingly and intentionally possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute. The indictments were announced by U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha, who, upon successful conviction of the defendant, will seek the forfeiture of more than $96,000 in cash and a vehicle seized at the time of the defendant’s arrest.
Based on information obtained during an ongoing investigation, Providence police arrested the defendant February 25, 2010, after stopping his vehicle a short distance from his Providence apartment. Officers, searching the defendant’s person, vehicle and apartment, seized more than 4 kilograms of cocaine, $96,216 in U.S Currency, a 2003 Mercedes Benz automobile, and materials used to cut and package cocaine.
The defendant is scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court on March 11, 2010.
An indictment is merely an allegation and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The matter was investigated by the Providence Police Department, with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
